On Tuesday, September 26, the final version of macOS 14 became available to the general public. If you still need to see it, go to System Preferences > General > Software Update to get your Mac to look for it.

September 26 was the earliest release date for macOS since 2018. And Sonoma was first released on September 26, 2023. At that time it was macOS 14.0.

Over the next few months, numerous updates will be released, small bug fixes and security updates, as well as larger versions that make some Sonoma features unavailable at launch.

The most recent beta version is macOS 14.1 (released to developers on September 27). On October 4, the second update to this beta version was released.

The beta version of macOS 14.1 adds a new scope to the General System Settings, which contains information about Apple care. The issue with deleted widgets has also been fixed and issues with Wallet and WidgetKit have been fixed.

Mac Mini from 2018 or later
Mac Pro from 2019 or after
iMac from 2019 or after
iMac Pro from 2017 or after
Mac Studio from 2022 or after
Note: If your MacBook or Mac is older than these models, then macOS 13 Ventura will be the last version you can download.

Steps to download macOS Sonoma
Apple has fully released macOS Sonoma after several months of public testing. In the next section, we will tell you in detail about each step of the process described below, and the download and installation are free and incredibly simple.   

But before you start, make sure you have backed up your Mac, because this is an important operating system update for your computer. If something goes wrong during installation, this can help fix the situation.

Let's go through the steps to download and install macOS Sonoma, done with that.

Step 1: Launch the System Preferences app by clicking the gear icon in your Mac's dock or selecting System Preferences in the menu bar with the Apple icon.

Step 2: Select "Software Update" in the "General" section of the "System Settings". Give the app time to check for updates. You should receive a message telling you to download a software update if your Mac is compatible with macOS Sonoma. And then click on the update button.

Step 3: Now your Mac will download and install macOS Sonoma. When everything is completed, you will be prompted to restart your Mac. In this case, use the Restart Now button.

Step 4: Your Mac may need to restart many times as you install macOS Sonoma. This is a routine procedure; just let her do her job, which may take some time.

Step 5: When the installation is complete, your Mac will boot from the login screen.

Time Machine is an Apple application that allows you to easily copy data from your Mac to an external storage device. When creating a backup, use a disk with a larger capacity than your Mac.

Step 3: Select a Disk from the menu.

Step 4: Select the hard drive that will be used for backup.

Step 5: Confirm which disk you will use. It is possible that the disk needs to be cleaned, formatted, or configured first.

Performing backups using iCloud
You can store files in the cloud on an Apple server using iCloud. With your Apple ID, you have access to iCloud. 

Unlike Time Machine, which creates a full backup, iCloud can save only those fragments that are inside iCloud. Examples are contacts, calendar, keychain, photos, and iCloud Drive.

Step 1: Click on the Apple logo in the lower left corner, then select System Settings.

Step 2: Select an Apple ID.

Step 3: On the left, select iCloud, and on the right, select what you want to save to iCloud.

Step 4: Select iCloud Drive, and then click Settings. You can select the programs, files, and data that you want to save to iCloud.

Step 5: iCloud Drive is now available from Finder. You can manually drag files to this location.

Main Features of macOS 14 Sonoma
Here are some new features that will be included in macOS 14. Not all expected new features will be available in the initial version of Sonoma

1. Changes on the login screen
You will notice the changes the moment your Mac boots into Sonoma. Apple has updated the login screen, now you enter your password at the bottom instead of in the middle.

2. Desktop Widgets
You can add other widgets from the widget gallery and place them anywhere on the screen. Apple has put a lot of effort into making sure that they are not distracting and practically disappear into the background.

3. Apple Music Player
As for widgets, a new Apple Music widget will be available. However, it will not be available at startup.

Other music features include collaboration with playlists, a list of favorite songs, and Favorites in the library. However, all this will be available later.

You can also add widgets from the iPhone using Continuity; the iPhone just needs to be nearby, connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the iPad, or on the same Wi-Fi network.

4. New login screen
Apple has changed the login page and introduced a new immersive animation that takes you to the desktop.

5. Game Mode
This new setting ensures that the game gets maximum priority on the GPU, improving the gameplay. According to Apple, this will make Mac games “more exciting.” 

There are additional modifications that should reduce controller latency and increase responsiveness in the game. It looks like these are enhancements that could help improve Mac games, but maybe they'll come too late.

Apple said that more Mac games are in development, and demonstrated "Death Stranding: Directors Cut" (which, unfortunately, is not new). 

Apple also talked about how it will help game developers migrate their games to Mac with the new Game Migration kit, which provides tools with which developers can easily migrate their games to Mac, significantly reducing game creation time.

6. Desktop Wallpapers
Apple is releasing some amazing animated wallpapers with images of destinations from all over the world.

7. Personal voice
The new personal voice feature allows you to train your Mac to communicate using voice, and then use it to convert text to speech.

8. Web Applications
It will be easy to convert a frequently visited website into a web application. Just open a webpage and select File > Add to Dock to add it to the Dock as an icon, then open it to give the webpage that opens outside Safari an app-like appearance.

9. Video conferencing
Apple has demonstrated how sharing a screen during a presentation can cause your presence to be missed. To solve this problem, Apple has created a new video effect called Presenter Overlay, which will place your face above the presentation and separate you from the background. It may look like the image above, but it is a smaller bubble with your face inside (taking up a smaller part of the presentation).

Another new feature is the ability to add reactions to your video to express your feelings about something. A fireworks animation, for example, will be played if you give two thumbs up. 

These features are not limited to FaceTime and can be used as video effects in other video conferencing programs.

10. Brand new Safari
WebKit will receive additional improvements, including new typography. If you don't use private browsing windows, they will be blocked by the new feature. 

With iCloud Keychain, it will be possible to exchange access keys and passwords with family members, which will be encrypted from beginning to end. You can create Safari profiles to distinguish between work and home/school accounts.

12. Improved keyboard
Among the keyboard changes, autocorrect and typing predictions will be improved. However, this feature will be added later.

13. Messages
The search in the Messages app will be improved, and it will be possible to narrow the search area as you progress. 

Before you open any potentially confidential movies or photos, you will be warned.  

Later, the design of the sticker panel will be changed, the possibility of group conversations will be added and iCloud messages will be improved.

14. Reliable protection
Improvements to the quarantine regime will help protect against cyber threats.
