How hackers remain anonymous

How hackers remain anonymous

a review of methods for hiding one's identity online

Online anonymity is a key goal for many hackers. To avoid detection, hackers use sophisticated techniques to hide their activities. Understanding these methods can be useful not only for cybersecurity professionals but also for a wide range of users who want to increase their awareness of online risks and threats.

1. Using VPNs and Proxy Servers
One of the most common ways to protect anonymity is to use VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and proxy servers. These technologies mask a user's real IP address by rerouting their traffic through remote servers.

How it works:
A VPN creates an encrypted connection between the user's device and a remote server, and all requests and responses are routed through this server. As a result, the website or service sees only the IP address of the VPN server, not the hacker's real IP address. Proxy servers, in turn, act as intermediaries, rerouting traffic through themselves.

Risks and Vulnerabilities:
While VPNs and proxy servers provide a certain level of anonymity, they may be ineffective against government organizations or companies that use powerful tools to monitor and analyze traffic. Furthermore, low-quality or free VPN services may collect user data, increasing the risk of exposure.

2. Anonymous Networks: TOR and I2P
TOR (The Onion Router) and I2P (Invisible Internet Project) are specialized anonymity networks that offer a much higher level of protection than regular VPNs and proxy servers.

TOR:
The TOR system routes internet traffic through a network of nodes (called "replacers") that sequentially encrypt and reroute data. This multi-layered approach makes it virtually impossible to trace the source of the traffic. TOR also provides access to anonymous websites that are inaccessible through regular search engines and browsers. Hackers actively use this network for communication and the distribution of malware.

I2P:
I2P operates on a similar principle, creating a distributed network for transmitting data between users. This system was designed to provide anonymous services on the internet and operates with its own protocols and tools to ensure privacy.

Risks:
Despite the high level of anonymity, both networks can be compromised due to configuration or usage errors. Government agencies and cyber experts can sometimes monitor nodes or identify vulnerabilities in software, which can lead to deanonymization.

3. Fake and Disposable Accounts
Many hackers avoid using personal information to register accounts. Instead, they create fake and disposable accounts using temporary email services or fake account generators.

How it works:
Disposable email services, such as Guerilla Mail or 10 Minute Mail, provide temporary email addresses that are automatically deleted after a certain period of time. This allows hackers to register accounts on various platforms without the risk of their real contact information being exposed. Fake names, phone numbers, and other data can also be used to create fake accounts.

Risks:
Using fake credentials may not be sufficient for complete anonymity, as platforms can track other metadata (such as IP address, device location, and user behavior).

4. Encrypting Communications
To ensure anonymity, it is important to protect not only your online activity but also your communications with other users. Hackers often use specialized messaging apps and encryption systems that make their communications inaccessible to third parties.

Encryption Tools:

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy): A popular method for encrypting emails and files, allowing users to exchange encrypted data that can only be decrypted with a key known to the recipient.
Signal and Telegram: Secure messaging apps that use end-to-end encryption to protect messages. While Telegram is closed-source, Signal is an open-source solution, making it more popular among security-conscious hackers.
OMEMO and OTR: Encryption protocols for messaging apps, such as XMPP clients (Jabber), that ensure message privacy.
Risks:
While encrypted communications significantly hinder access to correspondence, vulnerabilities can arise at the device level, where message decryption keys can be compromised, or through software vulnerabilities.

5. Operating Systems for Anonymous Work
Using standard operating systems can lead to data leaks that could help identify the user. Hackers prefer specialized operating systems designed to ensure anonymity and security.

Tails:
One of the most well-known anonymous operating systems, Tails runs from USB drives and leaves no trace on the computer after shutdown. It integrates Tor, encryption, and other privacy tools.

Whonix:
This operating system runs on virtual machines and routes all internet traffic through the Tor network. It is also protected from leaks of IP addresses and other data that could help identify the user.

Qubes OS:
A security-focused operating system, Qubes OS uses isolation technology, separating applications into separate virtual machines. This prevents attacks and infection of the entire system when a single application is compromised.

Risks:
Despite the high level of protection, using such systems requires some technical expertise. Incorrect settings or operational errors can negate all security measures.

6. Hidden Payments and Cryptocurrencies
Financial transactions are one of the weak points of anonymity. To conduct untraceable payments, hackers use cryptocurrencies such as Monero and Zcash, as well as other methods of hiding transactions.

Monero:
This cryptocurrency is designed specifically to ensure complete transaction privacy. Unlike Bitcoin, where all transactions are recorded on the public blockchain, Monero hides both the sender and recipient, as well as the transfer amount.

Zcash:
Zcash allows users to choose between transparent and encrypted transactions. This makes it a flexible tool for those who need anonymous financial transactions.

Mixers and Tumblers:
Even when using more popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, hackers can further secure their transactions by using mixing services (tumblers). These services mix multiple transactions, making it virtually impossible to trace the source or destination of the funds.

Risks:
Cryptocurrencies offer a high level of privacy, but they are not immune to blockchain analysis, which can be used for deanonymization. Also, some countries are tightening regulations on cryptocurrency transactions, making their use more difficult.
