A Ukrainian man behind bars for secret cryptographs: two million mining turnover Revealed
A Ukrainian Citizen Has Been Arrested for Cryptojacking Worth More Than $ 2 Million
According to the National Police of Ukraine, a joint operation with Europol led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man suspected of organizing a crypto-hacking scheme. The accused caused damage in excess of two million dollars by illegally using the computing resources of an American company to mine cryptocurrencies.
According to a statement released by law enforcement agencies, the attacker has been infecting servers with a miner virus since 2021, using the bruteforce method to penetrate. This method consists in the automated selection of access keys until the correct password is found. The suspect gained access to at least 1,500 accounts, which allowed him to distribute malicious software and create more than a million virtual machines for mining.
In January 2023, the cloud service provider informed Europol about the compromised accounts. The investigative authorities of Ukraine and Europol launched a joint investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect after several months of active cooperation. As part of the investigation, law enforcement agencies conducted searches at three sites in search of evidence against the detainee.
This incident has had a significant impact on the business environment. Last year, Google Cloud, which independently faced similar attacks, allocated $ 1 million to victims of hidden mining in the form of compensation. Such measures are seen as an important step in restoring trust among corporate users in cloud services.
