The Bitdeer cloud mining platform has highlighted Bitmain's Antminer S21 miner as a technological breakthrough of 2023. This cryptocurrency mining device stands out among its peers due to its impressive technical characteristics and innovative solutions.
During the first Mining Awards ceremony, established by Bitdeer to mark the leaders of the cryptocurrency industry, Antminer S21 was recognized as the best in the "Technological Breakthrough of the Year" nomination. The device was released to the market in the fall of 2023 and boasts a hashrate of 200 T (terahashes per second) with an energy efficiency of 17.5 J/TH (joule per terahesh).
The ceremony also marked other industry leaders: the Foundry mining pool, which controls 28.1% of the global hashrate, was recognized as the mining pool of the year, and the NiceHash platform was highlighted as the best cloud hashrate platform.
Among the significant events in the industry was the deal of the mining company Whatsminer, which in December signed a $380 million agreement with Phoenix Group aimed at developing environmentally friendly bitcoin mining.
Bitdeer, which is behind the organization of the Mining Awards ceremony, was part of Bitmain's corporate portfolio until 2021, which highlights the close links between mining innovation and the cloud mining market.
In the context of the impact of cryptocurrencies on energy consumption, data from the Energy Information Agency (EIA) indicate a significant imprint of the industry, comparable, for example, to the annual energy consumption of Utah, which accounts for up to 2.3% of total electricity consumption in the United States. Therefore, energy efficiency and environmental issues continue to be relevant for the cryptocurrency industry.
